CBD oil is one of the most talked-about alternative therapies in recent years, and its rising popularity has reached the pet-care market. Pet owners are turning to CBD oil to help their companion animals with everything from arthritis to anxiety to seizures, and many other conditions.
With so much information floating around online regarding CBD oil for pets, it can be difficult to know whether or not the supplement is safe and effective.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil, also called cannabis oil, is an extract of the hemp (cannabis) plant. It’s important to note that CBD oil and other hemp products are extremely low in tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana that produces the “high” associated with marijuana use.
Ongoing Research
The body of research relating to CBD oil and pets is small, but growing. In February of 2019, the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine published the results of its study showing that CBD oil can improve pain and other symptoms associated with osteoarthritis in older dogs. Cornell has expanded the study to take a look at the effects of CBD oil on pain in cats.
A new study by Colorado State University in Fort Collins has found that CBD oil can reduce the frequency of seizures in epileptic dogs by 89% (a larger study will still need to be done to confirm the results).
In addition to the research, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence from dog owners that CBD oil can help to reduce pain and control seizures.
CBD Oil for Pets
CBD oil works by interacting with the endocannabinoid receptors that run throughout the nervous system. In general, CBD oil should be administered orally in the form of drops, although there are some topical treatments available.
THC toxicity is the most significant risk when it comes to CBD oil for pets, and getting the dosage right is essential. Symptoms of THC toxicity include lethargy, difficulty walking, glassy eyes/dilated pupils, vomiting, and loss of consciousness.
